PATHOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS
Soft tissue, left thigh, medial, excisional biopsy
---Myxoid liposarcoma
GROSS FINDING
Received in formalin is a piece of tan brown skeletal muscle,
measuring 17x11x7 cm. A tan yellowish soft tissue tumor,
measuring 7x6x5 cm. Representative parts are taken for
sections in 9 blocks. A-F: tumor margins, GH: tumor, I:
skeletal muscle. Immunostains of S100,SMA and desmin are done
on block A. (CCH)
MICROSCOPIC FINDING:
Sections show a picture of liposarcoma composed of nests of
proliferating lipoblasts with a prominent anastomosing capillary
network. Mucoid matrix rich in hyaluronides-sensitive acid
mucopolysacchrides is present. Round cell areas, characterized
by solid sheets of primitive round cells, are distictive(>5%).
Tumor necrosis is present and mitotic figures are frequently seen
in round cell areas (6-10/HPF). The resection margings are free
from tumor involvement.
